Basic Troubleshooting Methods
With the basic troubleshooting methods mentioned below, you can easily rectify the error code issues.
Power Cycling
Since this is an easy yet effective method, we will start with this. In this process, we will do nothing but restart your router and your Roku device. By doing so, you will be doing a soft reset of your setup. When this is done, any corrupt files will get removed during the restart.
[1] You will have to turn off both your router and your Roku device. Now, remove the power cord from both your Roku device and router.
[2] The next step is to wait for another 5-10 minutes. This will let any remaining power in the device be discharged. Once done this, you can plug back in the power plugs for both.
[3] The user who has a Roku stick will have to remove it from your TV and take the plug out of your TV. After 10-15 minutes, plug back everything in, including the Roku stick.
Once this is done, you have power cycled your Roku device. After that, you can check whether the error code is displayed on your Roku device or not.
System Restart
Also, restarting your Roku device is one of the fixes you could try to fix the Roku error code issues.
[1] Go to the Settings on your Roku TV.
[2] Then, select the System option from the Settings.
[3] Next, choose System Restart > Restart.
Once again, select the Restart button if prompted. After that, your Roku device will turn off, and after a few seconds, your device will automatically turn on by itself.
Troubleshooting Internet Connection Errors
As we have stated earlier, there might be something wrong with your internet connection. So, if your Roku won’t connect to the internet, you can follow the troubleshooting methods mentioned below.
Checking Network Connection on Roku
This is best if you are trying to diagnose whether the internet connectivity is up to the standards of the Roku device. This is because that might be the reason for Roku error code 14.40. By following the steps below, you can easily rectify the error.
[1] From your Roku home screen, navigate to the Settings option.
[2] Once you have clicked on the settings, choose the Network option.
[3] Select the Check connection option from the list of options.
Once you click on that, the system will start its diagnostics. Wait for a few minutes, and the results will be displayed. If the results show Good or Excellent, that means that the internet is stable. But if not, then you can try some methods that we suggest and work most of the time.
Checking if the Router is using MAC Address Filtering
There are often times when the user has forgotten whether MAC address filtering is on, on their router. This is a security feature that lets only selected device and their MAC address access the router’s internet. If you want to stop doing that, you will just have to turn it off. If you want to add your MAC address, you will only have to add it manually.
[1] Open the router settings by filling in the IP address, which is written on the back panel of the router. It will look like 192.168.1.1.
[2] Once you fill in the admin name and password, which are all written on the back panel or the manual, go to the Advanced tab and then to Network Filter.
[3] Now select your Roku device MAC address from the DHCP Client list and hit the arrow button. Your mac address will be selected and noted down automatically. Finally, Click on Save Settings to enable your MAC address.
Reconnecting your Router, Trying a New One, or using a Wired Connection
Next up is shifting the access point of your internet to the Roku device. In this, we will try three different processes. We will reconnect the previously used router, add a new router or add a wired connection.
First, we will reconnect your router. There are often times that the password is deleted by mistake or by wrong input. So, if that’s the case, you can follow the steps below to reconnect to your router.
[1] Go to the home screen of your Roku, and on the left pane, select the Settings from the list of options.
[2] Now, select the Network option in the list of settings options.
[3] Once you have done that, select the Set up connection.
[4] Now select the Wireless option; when you do that, you will see a list of available Wi-Fi. Choose yours and fill in the necessary credentials. You will be reconnected to your router.
Connecting the router is not very different from that of the one shown above. You will have to follow the same steps. Instead of your old router, you have to just connect the new one and fill in the credentials, and you are done.
Now we will show you how to add a wired connection to get better internet connectivity. This is very reliable when compared to wired too. You will have to follow the steps shown above from 1 to 3. Note that you will have to connect the ethernet cable to its specified port for it to be recognized. Then, you can follow the steps mentioned below:
[1] After selecting the Set up connection, now, instead of choosing the wireless option, select the Wired option and click on that.
[2] After that, follow the on-screen prompts to get your Roku device connected to the wired internet connection.
Resetting the Network on Roku
There might be some corrupt files that might be affecting a proper handshake between the router and your device. For removing them, we have an option to reset the network.
[1] Select the Settings on the home screen menu and select the System opinion.
[2] Now, from the System section, select Advanced system settings > Network connection reset.
[3] Next, select the Reset Connection option, and the process of network reset will begin.
By following the steps above, you will have successfully reset the Network. But now, because of that, you will have to add your connection manually. But fret not because we will show you how to do that too.
[1] You will be revisiting the Network settings again. Once you are in the Network section, select the Set up connection option.
Choose the Wi-Fi name of your router and fill in the credentials, and now you have successfully connected your Wi-Fi. With that completed, we have shown you possible troubleshooting methods regarding the internet.
